Congressman Michael Cloud Visits Visionary Fiber Technologies in Lockhart to Experience Rare Earth Processing Innovations

Lockhart, Texas — Visionary Fiber Technologies (VFT) recently welcomed U.S. Congressman Michael Cloud (TX-27) and members of his district team to the company’s Lockhart headquarters for a technical briefing and demonstration of VFT’s rare earth mineral processing innovations. The visit highlighted Texas-led advances that are poised to strengthen America’s supply chains for critical minerals used in clean energy, high-performance electronics, and national defense.

During the tour, VFT engineers and scientists shared data from recent piloting campaigns using the company’s patented Fiber Reactor platform—an industrial, fluid contactor that enables high surface-area reactions and separations. In rare earth mineral applications, the Fiber Reactor is being used to improve the efficiency of leaching, selective precipitation, and solvent extraction steps, with the goal of higher recoveries, lower reagent use, and a dramatically reduced footprint compared to conventional equipment.

“Texas companies are stepping up with practical, scalable solutions that reduce our dependence on overseas supply chains,” said Congressman Michael Cloud. “It’s encouraging to see this level of innovation in Lockhart, where industry partners are scaling lab breakthroughs into real industrial capability.”

VFT leadership briefed the Congressman on project milestones across three areas:

  • Feedstock flexibility: Early results show promising performance on varied domestic feedstocks and industrial by-products, an important step to unlocking U.S. sources of rare earths.
  • Process intensification: The Fiber Reactor’s high mass-transfer environment shortens residence times and can consolidate unit operations—offering a pathway to lower capital and operating costs.
  • Sustainability metrics: Process designs target reduced chemical consumption and waste volumes, aligning with environmental stewardship and permitting needs.

“Our mission is to make critical-mineral processing simpler, cleaner, and faster,” said Dr. William Lanier, Chief Science Officer, VFT. “With the Fiber Reactor platform, we can tune kinetic processes across interfacial regimes to get greater enrichment of essential metals in a fraction of the space.”

Congressman Cloud and his staff discussed workforce development, permitting timelines, and opportunities for federal–state collaboration to accelerate domestic critical-mineral capacity. The visit concluded with a demonstration of modular skids designed for rapid deployment to mine sites and processing hubs across Texas and the broader United States.

The visit was coordinated with the Lockhart Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), which continues to support VFT’s growth and the expansion of high-tech manufacturing opportunities in Caldwell County. LEDC facilitated introductions and helped bring together federal stakeholders, local leadership, and industry innovators to discuss how Lockhart can play a key role in advancing domestic critical-mineral capacity.
